A Series of Firsts at this Years’ Games

Jack Terpins
President Maccabi World Union
President Latin American Jewish Congress Brazil

This last Maccabiah Games featured a series of particularities: we were able to carry it out after two years of a pandemic, we were honored to have the presence of American President Joe Biden at the opening ceremonies, the Ukrainian team was able to overcome the challenges occurring in their country and participate, a very high number of athletes took part and, finally, Brazil proudly led a delegation of 600 people, the third largest delegation
of the games.

Brazil proudly led a delegation of 600 people.

The Maccabiah, the largest global Jewish sporting event, brings together young people from all over the world; for example, the Brazilian team had athletes from several states participating. This was a great opportunity for them to get to know each other inside and outside their original groups, resulting in meetings, friendships and even marriage!

The future of our Jewish youth is the force that mobilizes me to do everything possible to make participation in the games a reality for them.

Win, lose or draw, the Maccabiah Games was
an incredible experience

Ashley Lerner
CEO, Maccabi Great Britain

I’ve had the privilege of attending multiple international games in the past but the 21st Maccabiah Games will also stand out as it was my first as CEO of Maccabi GB. To walk out at the Teddy Stadium after a 5-year wait was an
incredible experience.

The way the Maccabiah Games brings the community together is truly magical

Despite the Games being touch and go with COVID still very much taking its toll on society, we managed to take Team Maccabi GB’s largest-ever delegation to a Maccabiah Games, which serves as a huge testimony to all the managers, physios, staff and of course our
incredible athletes.

The way the Maccabiah Games brings the community together is truly magical and I’m so proud of the whole delegation. Win, lose or draw, the Maccabiah Games was an incredible experience.

Delegates: 236, Medals: 51 for MAKKABI Germany

Jérôme Buske and Christine Schüssler
Press Department, MAKKABI Deutschland

The Maccabiah Games took place in Israel from July 12th to 26th, 2022. More than 10,000 athletes competed against each other in forty sports in the Juniors, Open and Masters age groups. Thanks to intensive preparation — twenty-seven training courses in the calendar year 2022 alone - and a final pre-camp immediately before the start of the Maccabiah, MAKKABI Germany was able to provide the largest German delegation to date with 236 athletes, including more than 100 juniors.

At the opening ceremony in Jerusalem, the delegations from all over the world were presented. Jonathan Ben-Shlomo, the most successful German athlete to date in swimming, Beatrice Feicht, triathlete and oldest participant, and Kristina Dingeko, tennis player and the youngest participant, carried the flags of the Federal Republic and MAKKABI Germany when the German-Jewish team entered. With brilliant choreography and a shower of confetti in black, red and gold, they led the German delegation to the Teddy Kollek Stadium, which was attended by high-ranking Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog and US President Joe Biden.

Eight medals in table tennis, tennis, swimming, badmintion, fencing and open water.

The competitions were held across the country over the two-week period, mainly in the regions around Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Netanya and, exclusively for the juniors, Haifa. In addition to many proven sports in the individual and team areas, MAKKABI Germany was also able to participate in some new sports, such as sport climbing, weightlifting, beach volleyball and basketball 3×3.

After the extremely successful European Games in 2015 and 2019 and a medal record at the Maccabiah 2017, the German delegation was under a certain amount of pressure to succeed, but they triumphed with flying colours: a new record was set with a total of fifty-one medals won. The individual sports deserve special mention, especially table tennis and swimming, where a total of seventeen and thirteen gold, silver and bronze medals were won in all age groups. The juniors' eight medals in table tennis, tennis, swimming, badminton, fencing and open water give hope for a successful future.

This year's games were marked by a sad anniversary: the fiftieth anniversary of the terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, in which eleven Israeli athletes and a police officer were murdered. This was commemorated in a fitting ceremony during the pre-camp and at the opening ceremony of the Maccabiah. In addition to the sport, the hosts of the Maccabi World Union organized an extensive supporting program. Besides trips to the Dead Sea, the Jordan River and Tel Aviv, a visit to the Yad Vashem memorial was organized, and there was a large bar and bat mitzvah celebration at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, a very special highlight for the juniors. Following established tradition, the first Shabbat of the Maccabiah was celebrated together at the various locations.

Once again, the Maccabiah Games, which is the third largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic and Paralympic Games, has proven that it is the sporting home of all Jewish athletes from all over the world, who not only compete, but make friends in Israel and live Jewish traditions. Makkabi is a symbol of living Judaism all over the world, but especially in Germany.

Fourteen Medals for Maccabi France!

Freddy Atlani
Vice President, Maccabi France
Head of the 2022 Maccabi France delegation

The 2022 Israel Maccabi Games have just ended, and they were fabulous
on all levels— sporty, emotional, and festive. We were also thrilled by the exceptional presence of American president Joe Biden during the opening ceremony in Jerusalem. Memories that will be forever engraved in our
hearts and minds!

Two hundred and five French athletes took part in these games and fourteen left with medals.

The Maccabi games are not something to be talked about-they are something to be experienced.

In football, France reached the semi-final for the first time in its history after a great match against the big winners of the competition, Uruguay. In basketball, France lost in the final against the USA after leading for three quarters.

In addition, our French athletes won many medals in other disciplines, such as fencing, karate, padel, and tennis.

The Maccabi Games are not something to be talked about— they are something to be experienced!

We are very happy for all the athletes who participated in the games for the first time and are looking forward to the next games in 2025. If you wish to participate in the next big competition, do not hesitate to contact me to join the French Maccabi team.

I invite you all to follow our Instagram account to relive the great moments of this fortnight and extend the adventure @federationfrancaisemaccabi

My First Maccabiah

Lennox Skalieris
Germany

It was a great feeling to walk into the Teddy Kollek Stadium with the German delegation at the Maccabiah opening ceremony. Singing Hatikvah with 15,000 people was something very special.

My football team got off to a great start in the competition and we won the first game. Unfortunately, things didn't go so well after that. We definitely could have done more.

Singing Hatikvah with 15,000 people was something very special.

As a group we went to the Kotel and the Dead Sea. I also used the time in Israel to visit my grandmother and some old friends who live there.

I was impressed by how many Jewish athletes came from all over the world, how open the mood was among them and how much respect Maccabiah participants enjoy in Israel. This was my first Maccabiah and a fantastic
experience for me!

A Bronze for Father and Son

Daniel Schweiger
Co-Manager, Team Maccabi Great Britain Under-16 Boys Football Team

Competing in the Maccabiah Games as I have many times before is incredibly special; however, co-managing the Under-16 Football team with my own son Toby as part of the squad took that experience to another level.

It wasn’t an easy job, but it was imperative that I treated Toby no differently than any other squad member. As well as being the correct way to manage one’s own son, I also wanted Toby to feel like the other guys, despite his dad being the co-manager
of his squad.

Jumping in Toby’s arms to celebrate our bronze medal was incredibly emotional.

Highlights for me definitely included singing the Hatikvah at the opening ceremony with my son and wearing tefillin at The Wall together whilst repeating the Shema. But finally, jumping in Toby’s arms to celebrate our bronze medal - he is much bigger than me! - was incredibly emotional.

A Father and Son Reflect on the Games

Eyal Bar-On
Mexico

This year marked my fifth time participating in the Maccabiah Games in Israel; I have also participated in four Maccabi Pan- American games and one Maccabi European game.

In this Maccabiah, I participated as a coach for the Futsal Mexico +45 team. We had an excellent Maccabiah and won the silver medal — we lost to Israel in penalty shoot-outs.
I am very proud of my team, which achieved something historic by reaching the finals.

I also had the pleasure of watching my son Itai represent the Futsal Mexico open team.
They had a great Maccabiah: they earned a bronze medal after unfortunately losing to Great Britain

We love the Maccabiah and what it represents.

The Maccabiah Games have been an incredible sports experience for us, given the high level of competition, the intensive training and the expectation of winning! In addition, the pleasure derived from attending the games in Israel allowed us to visit Jerusalem and enjoy the beaches and restaurants of Tel Aviv.

We love the Maccabiah and what it represents. Thanks to these games, we are able to come with our families and enjoy not only Israel, but what Israel Bonds has done for the State of Israel.

All of this was possible due to the wonderful people who headed the Maccabiah in Israel as well as in Mexico, our great sports club (CDI), and the Mexican Maccabiah committee, headed by Victor Goldner and Gabriel Shanon.

We look forward to the Pan American games in Buenos Aires 2023, which I am sure will have a very big Mexican delegation.

Israel was an exceptional host

This Maccabiah Games was very different from all others. To begin with, the Covid-19 pandemic stopped many of us from giving it our all, but nevertheless we always faced the opportunity with professionalism and tons
of desire to compete.

Israel was an exceptional host, providing an excellent Maccabiah; without a doubt it was very special, and one we´ll remember forever.

Thank you very much, Israel. We´ll see you again in 2025!
