Answering the Call with Heart and Hands

From Brazil to Israel with Love

Lara Turkie Schnaider
Brazil

Lara Turkie Schnaider The day of October 7, 2023, like for many Jews around the world, changed my life. I woke up to find my husband, restless and anxious, turning on the TV in the bedroom to watch the news. His entire family lives in Israel: mother, sister, brother-in-law, my nephews, two of whom were serving in the army that same day. When he told me that what would later be confirmed as the largest terrorist invasion of Israel since its independence was underway, I jumped out of bed, my heart racing. I opened my WhatsApp and the messages and videos from friends and family in Israel were filled with desperation. It was horrific, hell on earth! From that moment on, the only thought that consumed me was; I have to go there and do something! But with three children, a husband, and a job, this is not an easy decision. Exactly two months later, on January 7, 2024, I was boarding a plane to Israel.

When I got there, I met up with the group of volunteers I had signed up with to spend 10 days volunteering and visiting the sites of the attacks, offering support and solidarity. I felt it was essential to document everything, especially knowing there were and are so many people trying to deny that it ever happened.

Lara Turkie Schnaider The volunteer work was incredibly varied, from picking oranges to making necklaces with the “Bring Them Home” tags. After all, the farmer, the doctor, the businessman, the girl who makes necklaces, were all mobilized as reservists or serving in the army. If they weren't on the battlefield, they were in the most affected regions, cooking, welcoming people and helping the population with whatever they needed. I have never seen a nation so united and so supportive in my entire life! I am proud to be a part of it!

One of the most moving and memorable moments of this trip was the day we got close to the Gaza border, where a base had been set up to welcome soldiers returning from there. Before heading home, they would stop at this base. There, volunteers made pizza, hamburgers, popcorn, hot dogs, there was a donut cart, another one with barbers shaving the soldiers, a synagogue. It was the least that could be offered to these heroes! At one point, a group of soldiers who had just returned from Gaza arrived. When one of them heard me and my friend speaking Portuguese on the “hamburger production line”, he asked where we were from, and I immediately replied, “Brazil”.Lara Turkie Schnaider He looked at me and said, “what are you doing here right now?!” We explained that we were there as volunteers and that this was the least we could do for them. At that moment, he began to cry, deeply moved, and said that it was great to experience kindness after leaving hell...

I returned to Brazil sad to be going back... If I could, I would still be there today!

AM ISRAEL CHAI!

Standing Together Shoulder to Shoulder

Sophie B
France

Sophie BLike every Jewish person the world over, 7 October struck me like an earthquake. After the initial shock, the tears and the heartbreak that followed came the time to act. What could we do to show the world that we are standing tall, ready to rewrite this chapter of history for our resilient people?

Without hesitation, accompanied by a group of female friends, I packed my suitcase and took the first flight to Israel to show my solidarity. Thanks to the Leket Israël/France association, the largest food bank in Israel, I was able to lend a hand: preparing food parcels for the most destitute, harvesting vegetables (where there were no longer workers to do so), and assisting with BBQs for the soldiers. In these actions, I found purpose and meaning. Since November 2023, I've had the privilege of repeating this worthwhile endeavor many times, much to the delight of the Leket organizers. Taking part in this shared mission was Zionism in its noblest sense, a living expression of love and unity.

Sophie BAs a French citizen and as a member of the Israel Bonds Women’s Division, I take immense pride in supporting Israel, it’s economy and contributing to its future. It’s deeply fulfilling for me to show love for Israel in such meaningful ways, to stand shoulder to shoulder with its people, and to help build a stronger, brighter future.

Uniting Hearts: A response of love in the face of adversity

Bertha Raijman
Mexico

Bertha RaijmanThe need for unity and resilience has never been greater, and after the unimaginable events of October 7, 2023, in Israel, I felt compelled to contribute in any way I could. That day shook the world and deeply affected the Jewish community. In response to the horrific attacks, I made it my mission to show up, spread love, and stand in solidarity with Israel and my community.

I experienced this situation in a very personal way, as my nephew was spending his shnat hajshara – gap year at a kibbutz in the south of Israel where terrorists could have entered at any moment. The uncertainty and fear were overwhelming but also reinforced my commitment to being present and doing everything possible to support those affected by this tragedy.

Additionally, I frequently use social media as a platform to express my solidarity. By sharing truthful information, combating misinformation, and amplifying Israeli voices, I have aimed to raise awareness and educate others about the reality of the situation.

What inspired me to take action was the incredible strength of the Israeli people. Witnessing their resilience in the face of terror and their determination to protect the Jewish homeland and its people motivated me to act. Seeing others come together in support of Israel and Jewish people worldwide reaffirmed my belief in the power of unity and collective action.

The impact of these efforts has been profound. Even though my contributions may seem small in the grand scheme of things, they have reinforced the importance of solidarity and unwavering support. Knowing that my actions have helped provide comfort and awareness reminds me that every act of love and kindness matters. Showing up and spreading love is not just a response to a single event but a lifelong commitment to Israel and our community in times of need.

I Give, Therefore I Love

Justine Zwerlingr
Israel (Born in the UK)

Justine ZwerlingPre-Oct 7th - love and partnership have always been my top priority in everything I do, and I understood early on that this approach works in all aspects of life, though many people found it rather unconventional. I’ve always been an oddball. And I’m proud of it.

October 7th has shattered us all; it has changed everyone we know in so many ways, all of our realities, our lives and souls will never be the same. We have shed so called “friends” whom we helped along the way without a second thought. But when it came to our time, they turned their backs, and you know the rest.

My brave lion of a husband left to defend our beloved country Israel and save lives on the morning of 7th October. I have no words to express just how incredible he is and all the sacrifices we made for our country, and continue to make every day, minute by minute, for our people. Proudly and steadfastly, we still do it day after day over and over again.

Love אַהֲבָה حب

Instead of being paralyzed by this new horror of a reality for us all. I had no choice but to ‘growth hack’ it in a million different ways.

Gulf-Israel Women’s Forum: "Mothers of the Middle East" – A heartfelt moment on the King David rooftop, celebrating our love for the Abraham Accords.

My main support systems come from the Gulf, the Emiratis, Bahrainis, Moroccans, Lebanese, Saudis, Muslims, Christian and Druze at home; and many other countries Israel doesn’t yet have formal relations with like Pakistan and Iran. The bonds we have built with them are strong and demonstrate our shared values:

  • Imagine the power of humanity: hearing a siren, rushing to the bomb shelter with your kids, and then your phone flooding with calls from the Gulf: “Sister, how are you? We are praying for you, we are with you.” Children from the Gulf zooming with my darling children to try to distract them and keep them calm and tell them they are loved.
  • Imagine the collaboration: after discovering portable toilet seats in the UAE, I called a friend, and before long, we found a way to deliver them to Israel’s brave soldiers fighting in the north and south “Sister, it is my pleasure to support my brothers and sisters and all of Israel in a small way”
  • Imagine the thoughtfulness: “Sister I know your husband is away my wife baked you a cake, please come to the checkpoint, I will give it to you.”
  • Imagine the generosity: “Sister you have always done so much for our village, we are honored to give you vegetables and fruits.”
  • Imagine this spirit: “Sister, you are my light, please take these flowers for always protecting us all with your love.”
  • Imagine the love: “Sister, you protected me and my family during missile attacks in your bomb shelter. My heart is your heart, and we are stronger together always.”

We’ve had to shed people we supported, believed in, and thought were friends, but we’ve moved on. So, what did we gain? Our new family—our true friends and family. Some may call them our 'war family,' but I call them our family and friends for life.

Justine with Israel’s blind runner Avi Solomon (center), who placed 62nd out of 12,000 participants in the Abu Dhabi Marathon, celebrating the spirit of the Abraham Accords.

Since that dreadful day, I had to fight and build on so many different fronts. While my husband saved our world and protected us, I worked to save it in other ways - reverse engineering on every level.

I wrote love letters and songs of love to my precious husband, though I lost track of how many days he was serving. I was inspired by my great Auntie Eleanor (my middle name) OBE. Born in 1900, she met the love of her life, only to be told, 'If you marry, you’re fired.' What did she do? She lived apart from her beloved for 35 years, writing daily love letters to each other. They finally married when the laws changed, but by then, it was too late for children. They shared five years of marriage before he passed away. She was, and still is, my inspiration—chic, sassy, a timeless beauty with the strength of a lioness. I continue to heal us all with love, teaching other wives and mothers along the way. It’s a privilege.

Someone recently talked to me about growth through prolonged trauma – which is what we are all experiencing. And we are remarkably good at it, Baruch Hashem – Thank G-d. Everyday day we rise out of the ashes and rebuild together.

What is clear is we have the collective ability to build a better, brighter and kinder world. As my Emirati family have taught me, ‘Nothing is impossible’ لا شيء مستحيل - La shay' mustaheel.

I’m proud to be part of Ride for Unity, Gods Gang, and President Herzog’s Voice of the People initiative. Join us in rebuilding our new world and keep strong, spread light and love. AM ISRAEL HAI

Love is stronger than hate

Daniel Friedlender
Keren Hayesod Delegate in Frankfurt, Germany.

Daniel Friedlender Before and after the tragic events of October 7, Keren Hayesod has stood unwaveringly by Israel’s side. The international Keren Hayesod family strives to share love and solidarity in the face of immense hardship. From the very first moments of the crisis, Keren Hayesod launched an emergency campaign to provide immediate aid to affected communities. This crucial support helped families who lost everything and ensured that those in need were not left to face their pain alone.

Partnering with the Jewish Agency for Israel, we at Keren Hayesod initiated a rehabilitation project to help rebuild ten devastated communities near the Gaza border—places that had been shattered but not broken. Our “Communities 2Gether” initiative offers psychological support and aims to strengthen communal bonds, helping survivors take their first steps toward healing and renewal. Among many other initiatives, Keren Hayesod also supports Maslan, a crisis center in Israel’s Negev region that provides vital assistance to survivors of sexual assault. In the wake of October 7, Maslan has been crucial in offering psychological support, legal aid, and therapy to those affected, despite facing severe resource challenges.

To continue providing the urgently needed support for the people of Israel, Keren Hayesod is raising donations worldwide.

Beyond material support, Keren Hayesod has worked tirelessly to strengthen the emotional and spiritual bonds that connect Jews around the world. Keren Hayesod has arranged solidarity missions to Israel, allowing supporters from around the world to meet survivors, hear their stories, and witness firsthand the resilience of the people they were helping. These visits were a profound reminder that Israel is never alone—that the Jewish people, no matter where they are, stand together in times of crisis.

Through all these initiatives, Keren Hayesod not only provided life-saving aid but has also sent a powerful message: that love is stronger than hate, that unity is stronger than division, and that, even in the darkest times, the light of human kindness will always shine through.

Even in the darkest times, the light of human kindness will always shine through.
