Rawan Osman Speaks in Frankfurt
Israel Bonds welcomed guests to a special evening in Frankfurt with activist, author and content creator Rawan Osman. Speaking publicly in Germany about her work and personal journey for the first time, Rawan addressed an audience of more than 85 attendees and shared the experiences that led her from growing up in Syria and Lebanon to becoming one of the Arab world's most outspoken voices against anti-Semitism and in support of Israel.
Born in Syria, raised in Lebanon and educated in Germany, Rawan studied Islamic and Jewish Studies at the University of Heidelberg. Her remarkable transformation—from growing up in an environment shaped by anti-Semitic and anti-Israel narratives to becoming a self-described “Arab Zionist”—has informed her work with organisations including Sharaka, the Centre for Peace Communications and the Aseret Movement in Israel.
During her presentation, Rawan spoke candidly about her upbringing and the anti-Israel views that were deeply embedded in the society in which she was raised. Like many around her, she once believed that Hezbollah was fighting against “Israeli occupation”. Today, she is a strong supporter of Israel and the Abraham Accords and advocates for Israel’s continued success and security.
A pivotal moment in her journey came through a chance encounter with a Jewish shopkeeper in Strasbourg. The experience challenged many of her long-held assumptions and ultimately led her to become an outspoken activist against anti-Semitism. She also shared insights into her conversion to Judaism, describing how education, personal encounters and the values she embraced along the way shaped her transformation.
Following the events of 7 October, Rawan founded Arabs Ask, a social media platform dedicated to addressing misinformation about Israel and Jews that is widespread throughout the Arab world. She is currently working on a book about her evolving relationship with Judaism and Israel and is also the central figure in Tragic Awakening, a documentary exploring the roots of anti-Semitism.
Having visited Israel more than twenty times, Rawan spoke passionately about the country and what she sees as its greatest strengths—not only its military capabilities and technological achievements, but also the optimism, sense of community and determination of its people.
Guests listened attentively as Rawan shared her experiences and perspectives, and many were deeply impressed by her authenticity, confidence and willingness to speak openly about her journey and convictions.
The evening concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, giving attendees the opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics with the speaker.
Prior to Rawan Osman’s presentation, Hanita Ajnwojner, Managing Director of Israel Bonds Germany, welcomed guests and highlighted the importance of supporting Israel through Israel Bonds. She concluded the evening by thanking Rawan Osman for her inspiring contribution, as well as the Jewish Community of Frankfurt am Main and the Frankfurt Branch of the German-Israeli Society DIG e.V., for their valued partnership in making the event possible.
